window reflection

Project 2window required us to to design a window for a potential new space within one of these new or refurbished buildings, and this window should be a ‘window for contemplation’ At beginning, I think this house should be a independent space, because a contemplation place should be quite and silence, but take care about people’s mood unconsciously. It should be influence by surround scenery, you know, the beautiful nature scenery always can cure mirthless people, and give them spiritual cleansing.

I decided to use large floor-to-ceiling windows and dormer windows to give a similar feel to the outdoors. After do some research, I found a Reclining sunroof design, people who living in cockloft can recline on the floating window that stretches out to enjoy the beautiful view of the sky. This window design inspired me deeply.

I find that China has a unique approach to the design of window forms. One of the famous window designs in Suzhou Gardens is called the leaky window. The eaves of the door are designed over the window to achieve the effect of looking from the inside as if it were a doorway. Delicate eaves are half-hidden on the white walls, giving a visual effect of a ‘lute in the background’ and reminiscent of the traditional small folk doors. The ice-cracked pattern of the leaky window also acts as a shield. China is an introverted and subtle country, and a country that respects privacy, and this design approach shows a polite welcome to guests, but also has a kind of subtlety in it. I really like this approach, I think thinking is about having parts that surface and parts that are hidden, and this intriguing form is like a person thinking in layer by layer. So I put a decorative eave over the window, allow people to experience an entry through the circular window indoors.

I think I can use this form on my window design.

I want to give people a dreamlike feeling, It’s like walking in the clouds, the feeling of thinking in the depths of a pure mind. So I use white as the main color, and used the concrete pouring method to create the building shell. To make the architecture inner space more nature, I choose bring in the light of the day from roof. I have made a number of round holes of varying sizes in the flat roof and set up round windows which can all be opened so as to let in a lot of sky light, leaving patches of light on the floor like floating inspirations in a sea of contemplation.

In conclusion, I studied different design form of window, and re-intergrated my design concept, but I think I still have problem on how to make form and function work better.
